Winter backcountry athletes don't really don't want to be snow scientists, in order to play out in the backcountry. This book explains the fundamentals of avalanche awareness, focusing on: systems and checklists, step by step procedures, decision making aids, visual terrain, weather cues, rescue techniques, essential backcountry gear and how to use it.
Bruce Tremper wrote a concise reference book that condenses the conventional wisdom of avalanche awareness into 189 pages. The book has loads of illustrations, diagrams and real life photos, and written in Tremper's just the facts style. The book is easy to understand yet technically insightful, and his common sense approach get to the heart of the information. Avalanche Essentials is printed in a pocket size format for bringing along with you as a resource when travelling in avalanche terrain.
Bruce Tremper is one of the nation's foremost experts on avalanches and has been the director of the US Forest Service's Utah Avalanche Center since 1986. He coordinated all backcountry avalanche safety precautions for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
