The BackCountry sells gear on consignment for our customers

The BackCountry will help sell your gently used backcounty gear. The system is simple - We we take 40%, you receive 60%. When your gear sells, you will receive store credit or cash, if available. Cash is generally available in the afternoon or weekends. We can also pay you through  paypal. We do not mail checks. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to notify you when your gear sells. However, if you stop by our store, or give us a call, any of our employees have the ability to quickly see the status of your items. 

We only sell clean, modern, and functional snowboarding, skiing, touring or outdoor gear.  We also occasionally have used climbing gear and mountain bikes for sale.

When you come in, our staff will help you understand the pros and cons for bike and ski gear from each generation. We have been selling gear for a long time and will help sell yours too! We offer competitive pricing and will sell your gear for the best price. 

How do you sell your used gear at our store? Email gear/clothing pictures for authorization to [email protected] or text Mike at 530-362-0020. We only take in used gear in The BackCountry, our Truckee store. 

Consignment Guidelines 

Winter Outdoor Clothing Adult and youth clothing are both accepted. Clothing must be in good condition (no rips, stains, or bad zippers) and from quality outdoor brands such as Patagonia, Marmot, NorthFace, etc. We do not accept summer clothing, casual apparel, base layers, gloves, scratched goggles, or stickered helmets

Skis and Snowboards  We sell modern gear in excellent condition (we do not take long or skinny skis or gear with damaged bases or blown edges). If your skis or board are more than five years old, they may not be accepted.

Ski and Snowboard Boots  Boots must be clean and in good condition, with footbeds inside. Touring boots must have tech binding compatibility. AT, Tele boots, snowboard boots, kids alpine ski boots all sell well!

Backcountry Gear We accept avalanche safety gear, snowshoes, ski poles, mountaineering crampons, ice axes, rock climbing hardware, and rock climbing shoes.This equipment sells well only if it is modern and low mileage. 

Items Not Accepted We do not take general outdoor footwear for running, hiking, or mountaineering. 

If you leave consignment gear that does not meet standards, we will to contact you asap and you will have two weeks to retrieve your items. If we have not heard from you in those two weeks, you forfeit your claim to these items. We will typically review your gear while you are here, however, sometimes the store is too busy and that is not possible.
